When Matanel, Tzurel and Zohar, soldiers in the Nahal Haredi call each other "achi" (brother), they aren't speaking in military lingo or soldier jargon, they mean it. Three brothers, from the Shilgi family of Kiryat Ata serve together in the same battalion.
Matanel (21) was drafted into the battalion eight months ago, finished basic training and was deployed last week to the Jordan Valley. Tzurel, his twin brother, was drafted four months later and is still in basic training. Zohar (19), their younger brother completed basic training and was sent to the battalion's central command.
"Our family graciously accepted our decision to enlist in the IDF", the three said. "They even supported us. Our older brother served in the same battalion, so the idea didn't come out of the blue. It's too bad he was discharged, the four of us could have been together." In their small, tight-knit battalion, the three have gained celebrity status. Even when they are sent on different missions the brothers try to keep in touch. "We speak a lot over the phone, encouraging and reinforcing each other. There is nothing like a brother's support, someone who understands you and knows exactly what you're going through."
